■ Music Production Tips
Inspiration Series: ABSOLUTE.
Meet London-based DJ/Producer and queer clubbing champion ABSOLUTE..
Discover where ABSOLUTE. finds his inspiration for music, how he knows when a track is finished and why he started making music in the first place, in the following interview with Pirate.
Why did you start making music?
It felt like a natural progression, from just being obsessed with dance music as a kid, to spending every bit of cash on vinyl, to DJing.
DJing came from wanting to share music and the way it made me feel with others, producing came from wanting to create my own pieces of music to do the same.
Where do you get your musical inspiration from?
Apart from going out and listening to artists at clubs and festivals, or YouTube hunts, finding inspiration in any situation is something that I've developed more during the last few years.
Now I'm able to turn heartbreak, setbacks and failure into driving forces for creativity.
Are there any key artists whose sound has really influenced yours?
Back in the day I was inspired a lot by Thomas Bangalter, that raw energy that crosses techno and house but still had heart to it.
It was actually after reading Nile Rodgers' autobiography that I started to allow myself to think I could have a career in music, that it doesn't matter where you come from or your circumstances, you can make it happen if you put the energy in.
Finally, how do you know when a track is finished?
It’s a hard one as you could continuously evolve any track and of course you want it to be the strongest it can be.
I like to play demos out in DJ sets and then tweak things based on how they sound in the club.
If you can leave a track for a week and then listen back with fresh ears and it’s making you feel something, making you dance and still doing it for you from start to finish, then it’s ready.
